In October, Windlab hosted the Junction Rivers Industry, Workforce, Skills, and Training Roadshow, engaging stakeholders from Albury to Mildura.

The roadshow aimed to keep stakeholders informed about the project, highlight the benefits of South West Renewable Energy Zone (SW REZ) opportunities, and to lay the groundwork for future partnerships.

Key discussions focused on workforce and skills development, procurement and supply chain opportunities, and long-term community benefits. Attendees emphasised the critical need to address skills gaps in the wind energy sector, particularly in technical trades and apprenticeships, while also identifying opportunities for cross-border collaboration between NSW and Victoria.

The importance of social procurement and supporting local businesses was another key theme. Stakeholders discussed simplifying tendering processes and unbundling work packages to allow greater participation by SMEs and First Nations businesses. Community engagement also played a significant role, with discussions on partnerships with educational institutions like SuniTAFE and programs such as the Aspire Program to inspire and prepare young people for careers in renewables.

Infrastructure challenges, particularly housing and childcare, were consistently raised as barriers to workforce participation. Stakeholders noted the need for sustainable housing developments and improved childcare services to enable workforce inclusion, especially for women.

This roadshow reinforced the Junction Rivers project's potential to drive regional growth, support local businesses, and create lasting community benefits. Windlab remains committed to working closely with stakeholders to address challenges and maximise the opportunities the project presents for the region.

As planning progresses, these engagements will continue to shape the project's approach, ensuring it delivers positive, tangible outcomes for local communities.
